Notes

'The descent from Osward, through Anselm de Thurston his son to Matilda is set out in Charters of Abbot Baldwin and his successors as follows:

"Baldwin by the grace of God Abbot of St. Edmund to all the faithfull in God present and future greeting. Note that I give and grant to Osward the land and the church of Turstun peacefully and free from all services just as my predecessor Abbot Leofstan gave it and as I rendered it to his father Alvric the priest as witness all the brethren; he to perform six masses every week for the King and our brethren three for those living and three for the faithfull departed. On those who take it from him or from us be an everlasting curse. Amen. Let it be done."

The grant of Abbot Baldwin was confirmed after 1157 by Abbot Hugh.'
